Free vs Paid Candle Making Course: Which Is Worth It?

By Bhumika Sadana··5 min read·Ask a question

Table of contents

You can learn candle making for free. A beginner video course takes an afternoon, and there are hours more on YouTube. Most of the facts are out there.

What free cannot give you is someone looking at your candle. That gap is what a paid course sells, and it is worth knowing before you spend anything.

Free courses are enough to learn the steps and decide if you like the craft. A paid one-to-one course is worth it when you plan to sell, want to test several waxes, or want someone to check your own candle and tell you why it failed.

What free courses do well

Alison's Basics of Candle Making is free and runs 3 to 4 hours. It covers equipment, waxes, wicks, fragrance, recipes and safety, then the basics of starting a business. The certificate is a paid option, so check its price before you count on one.

YouTube adds more, and it is where most people see wax being poured for the first time. If you only want to make a few candles for your own home, this can be all you need.

The steps are easy to watch. The numbers on your own bench are what take practice.

What a free course cannot check

A video can show you a wick. It cannot tell you whether the wick you bought suits your wax, your jar and your fragrance.

That matters because, as Makesy's wick testing guide puts it, each fragrance, fragrance load, vessel and wax performs differently. Change any one and you test again.

CandleScience gives a fix for tunnelling: size the wick up by one in the same series. That fix only helps if you know the wick was the cause. Telling frosting, wet spots and tunnelling apart is what a second pair of eyes does.

In our own recipes

We add fragrance oil at 180°F at most and pour at about 160°F, and we weigh everything. Free videos often skip the numbers, so you copy the look of a pour and not the result.

Free training from the government

India has a free-or-low-cost route that many people miss. The Gujarat institute GMKRTI in Gandhinagar runs decorative candle training, and says no formal schooling is needed.

We could not see fees, duration or current dates on that page, so ask the institute directly. Training like this is usually in person and tied to a state or a local scheme.

Free course or paid course?

Three answers, then a pick for where to start.

What do you want to do with candles?

Get more from free resources

  1. Pick one wax and stay with it for your first ten candles.
  2. Weigh the wax and the fragrance oil. Do not pour by eye.
  3. Change one thing at a time: the wick, the fragrance load or the jar.
  4. Keep a simple log of wick, wax, scent, temperature and how the candle burned.
  5. Burn each test candle fully before you judge it.

That log is the same habit a course teaches. It also makes any question you ask later much easier to answer.

The bottom line

Learn the steps free. Pay when you need someone to look at your candle, or when a bad batch costs more than the course.

If you are unsure, start free and make a few candles. You will know within a month. When you are ready, our workshop or course guide shows which format fits.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free candle making course with a certificate?

Alison's Basics of Candle Making is free and 3 to 4 hours long. You can earn a certificate, but it is a paid option and the page does not show a price. Check the cost before you rely on it.

Can I learn candle making from YouTube?

You can learn the steps, and many people make good candles that way. What video cannot do is check your own candle. Wick size, fragrance load and temperature need testing for your wax and jar.

What do free candle making courses leave out?

Feedback on your own candle, and testing for your wax, wick and fragrance. Each combination performs differently, so you retest when anything changes. A 3 to 4 hour course also leaves little room for detailed costing and pricing.

Are there government candle making courses in India?

Yes. The GMKRTI institute in Gandhinagar runs decorative candle training with no schooling required, and NSIC has run candle training with state governments. We could not see fees or current dates, so contact them directly.

How much does a paid candle making course cost in India?

Our one-to-one course is ₹4,499 without a kit and ₹6,499 with one. It has three live sessions, recordings, six months of support and a certificate. Other providers differ, so compare what is included.

When is a paid candle making course worth it?

When you plan to sell, want to try several waxes, or want someone to explain why a candle failed. If you only want a few candles for home, a free course and a small test batch are usually enough.
