A few days later, you walk past it and there's nothing there. Or worse, you actually burn it. Once. Within a surprisingly short time, there's no fragrance left in the room at all, just the smell of wax and a wick burning.

This is a real, common complaint, not something wrong with you or your nose. Something specific happened between the shop shelf and your living room, and it usually traces back to one of a handful of causes.

The fragrance oil was not built to survive heat

A fragrance oil can be built purely to smell appealing sitting still, with little or no testing under actual burn conditions. Heat can break down a poorly stabilized oil before it ever reaches your nose.

That is exactly why a candle can smell fantastic in a shop and do nothing once lit.

The fragrance load was too low from the start

Fragrance load is the percentage of scent oil blended into the wax, and it sets a hard ceiling on performance. Most home candles sit anywhere from a bare trace up to around 10%.

Below roughly 6%, a candle can look and smell identical to a well-loaded one on the shelf, and still carry almost nothing once lit. This single number is one of the biggest, and least visible, differences between candles.

No real burn testing before it shipped

Reputable candle makers burn-test a batch, typically for two to four hours, before deciding a fragrance and wax combination actually performs while lit. Skipping that step is invisible at the point of sale, and only shows up once you burn it at home.

Here's what that testing looks like on our side. Noor, one of our bestsellers, has thrown strongly enough in winter testing that a room carried its scent even unlit, with a heater running nearby drawing air through the space.

That is what a well-loaded, heat-stable fragrance oil is capable of when wax, wick, and oil are actually tested together, not just assumed to work. Lighter, greener fragrances will still always read as more restrained than warm, resinous ones, in any candle, from any maker.

The wax did not carry that fragrance well

Wax is not a neutral container, different waxes hold and release fragrance differently once warm. Soy wax melts at a notably lower temperature than beeswax, around 45 to 54°C versus 62 to 64°C, which changes how quickly and how strongly each releases scent.

A fragrance also is not one note, it unpacks itself over the course of a burn. Light top notes evaporate fastest and vanish first, rounder middle notes carry most of an evening, and heavier base notes linger longest.

Paraffin can also trap fragrance molecules once excess wax builds up on the surface, which is part of why a cheaper candle can perform well for the first couple of burns and then go flat.

It is a genuine, recurring complaint, and it lines up with the mechanism above: a candle can be built to smell strong on a shelf, without much thought for what happens once it goes home and gets lit for real.

Where we are honest about our own limits

We rest every candle overnight before dispatch, not the full one to two week cure some makers use, and most reach you within about two days of that. We also rely on our suppliers' certificates of analysis rather than running independent freshness testing ourselves.

Neither is a flaw we are hiding. We would rather say exactly what we check, and what we do not, than let a vague "premium" claim do the work instead.

One thing you can do on your end costs nothing: if you can, let a new candle sit for about a week after it arrives before the first burn.

Here's what actually fixes it ✅

You cannot undo a low fragrance load or a fragrance oil that was never built for heat, but you can rule out every other cause, and often fix the problem entirely, with what you do next.

  1. Let it rest before the first burn. About a week, if you can, so the fragrance oil settles fully into the wax.
  2. Burn it long enough. A full one to two hours, until the wax pool melts edge to edge, before you judge the hot throw at all.
  3. Match the room to the candle. Test it in a smaller, closed space first, a bathroom or bedroom rather than an open living area.
  4. Keep it still. Away from fans, open windows, and AC vents, all of which disperse scent faster than your nose can register it.
  5. Store it covered. Lid on between burns, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
  6. Give your nose a break. If it still seems weak after all of the above, step out of the room for ten minutes before deciding.
