Candle basics

You have probably read, in the last year alone, that your candle is quietly poisoning your living room. The claim usually names paraffin and cites a study. Somewhere between the panic and the sales pitch that follows it, the actual answer got lost.

Wax type affects burn time, scent throw, and soot, but it is not the biggest safety question. Beeswax burns longest, soy and coconut throw scent well, paraffin burns fastest. What actually fills a room is fragrance load, not the wax underneath it.

What each wax actually is

Paraffin is refined from petroleum. Soy wax comes from hydrogenated soybean oil. Coconut wax comes from hydrogenated coconut oil, usually blended with soy to hold its shape in a jar. Beeswax is secreted by honeybees and has been used in candles for thousands of years.

None of them are inherently mysterious, and none of them are inherently dangerous at the concentrations a home candle burns at.

Most premium candles you see today, including ours, are not pure single-wax pours. Soy alone can be soft and prone to frosting, while coconut alone is expensive and often too soft to hold a container candle's shape.

A soy-coconut blend plays each wax's strength against the other's weakness, which is exactly why the combination has become so common in handcrafted candles.

Paraffin is not the villain the internet made it, but it is not the hero either

The paraffin scare traces back mostly to two small early-2000s studies, run in sealed test chambers rather than real rooms. A later 2014 study in the Journal of Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology found scented paraffin candles pose no known health risk, with emissions well below WHO limits.

CandleScience's review of the underlying research notes that what actually drives excess emissions across every wax type is an overwicked candle burning hotter and sootier than it should, not the choice of paraffin specifically.

Worth knowing

Candle-grade paraffin is fully refined, with under half a percent residual oil, which is a different material from the crude slack wax the scarier headlines are usually describing.

None of that makes paraffin the better choice. The honest answer is duller than either extreme: paraffin candles, burned properly with a correctly sized wick in a ventilated room, are not a known health hazard.

Soy, coconut, and beeswax do burn measurably cleaner and produce less visible soot, which matters more for your walls and lungs over years of daily burning than for any single evening.

Fragrance load decides scent throw more than the wax label does

This is the part most wax comparisons skip. A 100% soy candle at a 6% fragrance load will underperform a wax-blend candle poured at 9 to 10%. The wax is a carrier for fragrance oil, not the source of it.

Indian homes make this more visible than most. As one detailed India-specific candle guide points out, cross-ventilated construction, daily cooking smells, and ambient incense mean a weakly loaded candle loses the fight regardless of which wax it is made from.

In our own production, we run fragrance load at 7 to 10% depending on the scent and the soy-coconut blend it goes into. Every candle is made to order and rested overnight before it ships.

That rest period lets the fragrance oil bind into the wax instead of sitting near the surface, which is a big part of why a candle's first burn and its fifth burn smell about the same strength rather than tapering off.

Burn time and cost, honestly compared

Beeswax outlasts soy, and soy outlasts paraffin, at the same candle size, mostly because the wax itself burns slower. That is useful to know, but not something you need to calculate yourself.

What matters when you are actually buying is simpler: ask for the tested burn time in hours, not the wax name. Two candles in the same wax can still burn at different rates depending on wick size and jar width.

So the wax name alone won't tell you how long a candle will actually last on your shelf.

A note on candle safety, whatever wax you burn

Safety first

Trim the wick to about 6mm before every burn, keep candles away from drafts and fabric, and never leave one burning unattended or near a sleeping room, including near the pooja corner.

Wick trimming matters more to soot and air quality than the wax choice itself. An overwicked candle in any wax will smoke and blacken its jar; a properly wicked one in any wax burns close to clean.

No wax is dangerous at normal home-burning levels, and none is a magic fix for weak scent throw. Beeswax buys the longest, cleanest burn at the highest price. Soy and coconut, blended together, land in the middle on cost while covering most of what a home candle needs.

Paraffin remains the cheapest and strongest hot-throw option if soot and sourcing genuinely do not concern you. The wax label is a starting point, not the whole answer, so the more useful question to ask any brand, including us, is what fragrance load they actually pour at.

Is soy wax actually better than paraffin?

Soy burns cleaner and longer than paraffin, but paraffin holds fragrance at least as well and is not a proven health hazard at normal burn levels. "Better" depends on whether you are optimizing for cost, scent strength, or soot.

Is coconut wax worth the extra cost over soy?

Coconut wax generally throws scent a little more evenly at both cold and warm states than soy alone, which is why many premium brands blend the two rather than choosing one outright.

Why does my candle smell strong in the shop but weak at home?

Fragrance load and curing time matter more here than wax type. A candle poured at a low fragrance percentage, or burned before it has fully cured, will smell weaker regardless of whether it is soy, coconut, or paraffin.

Do paraffin candles actually release toxic soot?
