How Much Should You Spend on Diwali Gifts for Employees in 2026?

Table of contents

Most Diwali gifting budgets are copied, not calculated. An HR lead sees a number quoted on a vendor's homepage, multiplies it by the headcount, and calls it a plan. That number holds up right until finance asks where it came from.

Or until an employee's total gifts for the year quietly cross a tax threshold nobody checked.

Most Indian companies budget between ₹800 and ₹3,000 per employee for Diwali gifts, scaling with company size and seniority tier. But the number that should set your ceiling first is ₹15,000, the tax-free gift limit per employee under the Income Tax Rules 2026, not a competitor's price list.

Before you set a number
  • ₹15,000 is the tax-free non-cash gift limit per employee for FY2026-27, up from ₹5,000
  • ₹50,000 is the separate GST threshold per employee, beyond which the gift can be treated as a taxable supply
  • Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November. Orders for custom or bulk gifting should be placed by early September
  • Cash bonuses are always taxable, regardless of amount. Gifts in kind are not, up to the limit

The two numbers that should set your budget, not your instinct

Every gifting guide online will hand you a rupee figure. Almost none of them start with the two numbers the Indian tax system actually cares about.

That's a strange place to skip, given the whole point of a budget is avoiding a call from payroll in March.

The first is the income tax exemption. Under Rule 3(7)(iv) of the Income-tax Rules, gifts, vouchers, or tokens an employer gives an employee are treated as a nil-value perquisite up to a set ceiling per financial year. That ceiling has just moved.

Pazcare's HR compliance team confirms the Income Tax Rules 2026, effective 1 April 2026, tripled this limit from ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 per employee, applying under both tax regimes.

Why the form matters

The ₹15,000 exemption applies only to non-cash gifts. A Diwali bonus paid as cash or a bank transfer is fully taxable as salary from the first rupee, no matter how small. The same amount as a gift hamper, voucher, or product is tax-free up to the limit.

The second number belongs to your business, not your employees. Under Schedule I of the CGST Act, gifts an employer gives an employee are not treated as a taxable supply, as long as their aggregate value stays at or under ₹50,000 per employee per year.

This threshold is confirmed in the CBIC's own clarification on employer gifts.

Cross it, and the excess can be treated as a supply, with GST payable and input tax credit rules kicking in.

Threshold Applies to Limit (FY2026-27) What happens above it
Income tax exemption The employee's taxable income ₹15,000 per employee, per year Full value added to salary as a perquisite
GST supply threshold The employer's GST liability ₹50,000 per employee, per year Excess can be treated as a taxable supply

For almost every company reading this, the practical Diwali budget sits nowhere near either ceiling. The two numbers matter less as spending targets and more as guardrails.

This matters most for a company also running birthday gifts, anniversary gifts, or spot recognition through the same year, since the ₹15,000 exemption is a running total, not a per-occasion reset.

How much do Indian companies actually spend on Diwali gifts per employee?

Reported ranges vary widely by source and company size: roughly ₹500 to ₹5,000 per employee for most small and mid-sized companies, rising toward ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 at large enterprises with tiered leadership gifting.

There is no single correct number, only a range worth benchmarking against your own headcount and tier structure.

Corporate gifting platforms report meaningfully different figures depending on who they sell to. TapWell, which works across 2,000-plus Indian brands, places mid-sized companies (100 to 1,000 employees) between ₹2,000 and ₹5,000 per head, rising higher for large enterprises.

Vendors selling budget swag or small tokens naturally report lower figures. Treat any single vendor's number as one data point, not a benchmark.

A starting range by company size

Company size All-staff budget Manager tier Leadership tier
Under 50 ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 ₹3,000 to ₹6,000
50 to 500 ₹800 to ₹1,500 ₹1,300 to ₹2,500 ₹2,000 to ₹4,000
500 to 2,000 ₹500 to ₹1,000 ₹800 to ₹1,700 ₹1,500 to ₹3,000
2,000+ ₹350 to ₹700 ₹600 to ₹1,200 ₹1,200 to ₹2,500

These are starting ranges, not rules, based on typical practice across the sources above and reasoned down for scale.

Volume brings per-head cost down at the all-staff level, since logistics and bulk production costs eat into a fixed total budget. Leadership tiers hold their value regardless of headcount.

Where the mistakes actually happen

The number is rarely the problem. Three decisions around it usually are, and all three cost more in goodwill or compliance risk than a slightly higher or lower per-head figure ever would.

The cash trap

Giving a Diwali bonus as cash instead of a gift, assuming it falls under the same tax-free treatment, is the single most common and costly mistake. Cash is always taxable as salary. Only gifts in kind qualify for the ₹15,000 exemption.

The second mistake is giving every employee the identical gift regardless of tier, which reads as generic to leadership and as favouritism-avoidance to everyone else rather than genuine appreciation. A tiered structure, same category of gift, different scale, solves this without singling anyone out publicly.

The third is timing. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November. Anything involving custom packaging, branding, or bulk production needs six to eight weeks of lead time, which pushes the order deadline into early September, well before most companies start thinking about it.

What actually earns its place at each budget tier

Once the ceiling and the tiers are set, the harder question is what the money should buy. Corporate Diwali gifting in India has historically defaulted to dry fruit boxes and sweets, the safe, familiar choice, rather than the option that holds up best per rupee.

That default is shifting, with corporate buyers increasingly looking at lifestyle and home categories instead of consumable hampers.

A candle earns a different kind of attention than a snack box, because it sits on a desk or in a home for weeks after Diwali rather than being eaten in a day.

In our own production, fragrance load runs 7 to 10 percent depending on the wax and scent, sourced as IFRA-compliant, phthalate-free oils with a Certificate of Analysis per batch. Every candle is made to order and rested overnight before it ships.

That level of documentation is unusual at a ₹500 to ₹800 gift price point, exactly the range where all-staff Diwali budgets tend to land.

Format-neutral, by budget band

Budget band Works well Why
Under ₹500 Wax melts, single tealights Keeps unit cost low without feeling like a cut corner
₹500 to ₹1,200 Single candle or reed diffuser Sits on a desk or shelf for weeks, unlike a consumable
₹1,200 to ₹3,000 Two-piece gift set (candle plus diffuser) Reads as considered without needing custom packaging
₹3,000+ Curated hamper with a personal note Leadership tier, where presentation matters as much as contents

This is not a case for candles over every other format. A reed diffuser fits a hybrid or remote employee better, since it needs no attention for weeks. A room spray suits an entryway or shared space gift for a smaller team.

The point is to match the format to how the recipient will actually use it, not to how it photographs in a catalog.

The lever most companies skip

The deepest inefficiency in most Diwali gifting budgets is not the per-head number. It is spending the same amount on presentation as on product, which is backwards for a mass gifting run.

A ₹1,500 candle in cheap plastic wrap reads worse than a ₹900 candle in a simple cream box with a ribbon and a handwritten card.

Candles themselves now sit at a lower 5 percent GST slab, per the updated rate schedule effective September 2025, down from 12 percent. Packaging spend is a design decision now, not a tax-inefficient one.

The protocol

  1. Set your ceiling first: keep the running annual gift total per employee under ₹15,000 for the tax exemption, and total value per employee under ₹50,000 for the GST threshold.
  2. Segment by tier: all-staff, managers, leadership, at minimum. Same gift category, different scale, never a visibly different gift type.
  3. Pick the format by how the recipient will use it, not by what looks fullest in a hamper photo.
  4. Place the order by early September for anything custom, branded, or bulk-produced, working backward from 8 November.
  5. Document the value per employee for payroll, since anything given in kind above ₹15,000 in aggregate for the year becomes a taxable perquisite regardless of intent.

Once the ceiling, the tiers, and the timeline are settled, the only real variable left is the number itself, and that depends entirely on your own headcount and structure rather than a range pulled from someone else's homepage.

What should your Diwali gifting budget actually be?

Enter your headcount for one tier at a time to get a defensible range, not a guess.

A candle at the manager tier or a curated set at the leadership tier both hold up well against these ranges, since presentation cost per unit drops as production scales.

The product itself, made to order rather than mass-stocked, keeps per-piece quality consistent whether the order is for twelve people or twelve hundred.

Is there a tax-free limit on Diwali gifts to employees?

Yes. Non-cash gifts, vouchers, or tokens given by an employer to an employee are tax-free up to ₹15,000 in aggregate per financial year, effective 1 April 2026 under the Income Tax Rules 2026. This is a running annual total, not a per-gift reset.

The bottom line

A Diwali gifting budget that starts with a competitor's number is guessing. One that starts with the ₹15,000 tax exemption and the ₹50,000 GST threshold, then works down to a per-tier figure, is planning.

The gap between the two rarely shows up in the gift itself. It shows up in March, when payroll finds a perquisite nobody flagged.

How much should a small business spend on Diwali gifts for employees?

For companies under 50 employees, a starting range of ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 per employee for the all-staff tier is reasonable, scaling up for managers and leadership. Small teams can typically afford a higher per-head figure than large enterprises since total volume is lower.

Is there a tax-free limit on Diwali gifts to employees in India?

Yes, ₹15,000 per employee per financial year for non-cash gifts, up from ₹5,000, effective 1 April 2026 under the Income Tax Rules 2026. This applies under both the old and new tax regimes and covers the aggregate value across all gift occasions in the year, not just Diwali.

Do companies have to pay GST on Diwali gifts to employees?

Generally no, as long as the aggregate value of gifts to one employee stays at or under ₹50,000 in a financial year, per Schedule I of the CGST Act. Beyond that, the excess can be treated as a taxable supply, with input tax credit rules applying.

What is a good Diwali gift budget per employee for 2026?

Most companies land between ₹500 and ₹3,000 per employee for the all-staff tier, with leadership gifts running higher. The right number depends more on your headcount and tiering structure than on any single published average.

Should Diwali bonuses be given in cash or as gifts?

As gifts, if the goal is tax efficiency for the employee. Cash bonuses are always fully taxable as salary income regardless of amount, while non-cash gifts in kind are tax-free up to ₹15,000 per employee per year.

When should companies place Diwali gift orders?

Six to eight weeks before Diwali for anything involving custom packaging, branding, or bulk production. For Diwali 2026, falling on 8 November, that means finalising orders by early September to avoid rush charges and stockouts.

Are handcrafted candles or hampers better value for corporate Diwali gifts?

Neither is universally better. Candles and diffusers hold their presence for weeks after Diwali and suit desk or home use, while curated hampers work best at the leadership tier where presentation matters more. The right choice depends on budget band and how the recipient will use the gift.

If you are working out a Diwali gifting run this year, our gift sets and candle collection both sit comfortably inside the ₹500 to ₹1,500 band most companies land on for the all-staff tier, and our bulk order page covers lead times for larger headcounts.
